About
Lifespan is a macOS menu bar app designed to track the remaining useful life of flash drives. The utility will display the remaining life of your solid state drive (SSD) and will hopefully soon support CompactFlash and CFast devices.
Lifespan is designed to address the ever-increasing use and dependence of flash storage. If you need to get the most out of SSDs or other flash-based storage devices, you can benefit from knowing how much usable capacity is left on those drives.
Knowing the remaining available lifespan is very important, especially in scenarios where these devices are in heavy use. Most flash-based storage devices store your data in non-volatile NAND solid-state memory. Each cell of this flash memory can be “programmed and erased” a limited number of times. Drives can have less than 2000 or more than 10,000 erase cycles or p/e cycles, depending on the type and quality of NAND chips used. For a mid-range SSD, this means around 100TB of usable life, but this can vary. strongly in any direction. In any case, for every flash storage device, there will come a point when the data can no longer be stored and the device fails. Lifespan is a macOS menu bar app designed to track the remaining useful life of flash drives. It will display the remaining life of your Solid State Drive (SSD) and we hope to support CompactFlash and CFast devices soon. The Lifespan menu displays the current useful life and displays a warning when the device remains below the remaining useful life threshold. Armed with this knowledge, these flash storage devices can be taken out of service before the risk of data loss becomes likely.
Key Features:
- SimpleBecause Lifespan is a macOS menu bar app that's incredibly easy to use. Each drive is listed in the menu and you can see how each flash drive is performing in percentage.
- ExpandableInternal and Thunderbolt storage devices are supported by default. Adding support for USB devices is as easy as installing a driver, available directly from the Lifespan application.
