About
OpenIn.app is an advanced utility that allows you to open links, emails and files in the application of your choice. Just click on it and select the application from the list. This is the easiest way to organize your workflow.
Take control of installed applications on your Mac.
- Do you use multiple browsers or Mail apps on your Mac?
- Do you want to open links in a specific browser every time you click them?
- Do you want to open zoom prompts directly in the zoom app?
- Do you use multiple applications to work with certain types of files?
- Do you use your Mac for work and personal projects?
Remember the last time you double-clicked on an app and immediately regretted it? Because the fully loaded IDE was the default application for the Markdown file you wanted to edit? No more. We provide you with a list of applications that support a specific file type, so you can choose which application to open.
We can help you with this and much more.
## Examples of use
- You can configure OpenIn to open a browser (or application) based on the Focus defined on your system
- You can configure OpenIn to open mailto:// links directly using your browser and webmail provider (Gmail, Outlook, Fastmail, etc.)
- You can always define the default opening of files and links by a specific application, and also set up additional rules for domains, paths, key modifiers, applications in which links were clicked, etc.
- You can set the default to always show the application selection dialog
- You can configure the opening of links directly in applications that support them. For example, iTunes in Apple TV, music in Apple Music, zoom links in zoom apps, etc.
## JavaScript scripts
OpenIn is a 100% native macOS app written in Swift. But it also provides a JavaScript engine for writing your own rules, giving you access to a private API, so if you find the UI is limited for your use case, you can write your own rules the way you need.
## History
OpenIn stores a history of open files locally on your system. If you need to find a link you opened a few days ago, you can view the history and quickly find it.
## Security
OpenIn protects you from phishing attacks. If you choose to always see the application selection dialog, you can preview the link before sending it to the browser. Additionally, you can choose to open links in Safari's private mode or Chromium browser's incognito mode.
With the ability to rewrite URLs, you can configure scripts to remove tracking request parameters from URLs.
## Architecture support
Intel and Apple silicon supported!
OpenIn 4 is available for macOS Ventura. You can find OpenIn 3 in the app store, which supports previous versions of macOS.
## Update with OpenIn v3
Install OpenIn v4. It will automatically migrate the database from version 3. After this, you can safely remove version 3 from your system.
OpenIn features:
Open mailto links the way you need them
OpenIn will help you create a list of options for opening mailto links, so that when you click on such a link, you will see a selector only with certain email clients. These can be Mac apps like Mail or browser apps like Gmail. You can also change the order of the list so that your preferred options appear first.
Opening files in custom applicationsAs with email clients, you can personalize the selector list for all the files you open on your Mac. All you have to do is select the applications in which you want to open the files. What's more, OpenIn allows you to change file open prompts so that the application you choose opens the parent folder rather than the file.
Works with file extensions
You can even customize how files with certain extensions are opened. Simply drop the file extension into OpenIn, select applications to open it, and set OpenIn as your default file opener. You can also change the order of apps that appear in the selector.
Easy to personalize
Click the plus button in the top right corner of OpenIn Settings to add any custom apps and browsers you want to see in the selector. Install the app to always open Zoom links in the Zoom app. Even select which browsers should be the default for certain domains. Making OpenIn part of your workflow is easy.
